Foramen magnum

The Latin term for the large ovoid opening in the occipital bone of the skull. The spinal cord, an extension of the medulla oblongata, passes through the foramen magnum as it exits the cranial cavity. When pressure inside the cranial vault increases, the brain is displaced downward through this opening in a process known as herniation or coning. PRONUNCIATION: for-A-men MAG-num.
