One of several pulmonary function tests used to measure the amount of air an individual is able to forcibly exhale after taking the deepest breath possible. This test is used to identify and trend respiratory reserve and predict the need for mechanical ventilation, particularly in patients with spinal cord injuries. Also see Negative inspiratory force.
