Intraosseous (IO) infusion

The process of injecting medications, fluids, or blood products directly into the marrow of a bone. In the trauma patient, IO infusions are commonly inserted when rapid vascular access cannot be obtained. Intraosseous needles can be inserted in the humerus, tibia, and sternum.
