Massive transfusion

There is no universally accepted definition of "massive transfusion." However, in adults, massive transfusion is commonly defined as 10 or units of packed red blood cells transfused within 24 hours of injury or within any 24-hour period. In pediatric patients, common definitions include the replacement of 50% of a child's blood volume (approx. 40 mL/kg) in 3 hours or 1 entire blood volume (70-80 mL/kg) replaced in 24 hours.
