Reticular activating system (RAS)

The reticular activating system is located deep within the upper part of the brainstem. The RAS consists of a network of neurons and fibers that connect the brainstem with the cerebrum and the spinal cord. This system controls levels of consciousness and alertness and regulates behavior.
