Ligamentum arteriosum
TCAR Education Programs, Stephen Von Weller
A remnant of the ductus arteriosus which, during fetal circulation, connects the pulmonary artery to the aorta, bypassing the lungs. Once the ductus closes (after birth) only a fibrous ligament remains. In the event of sudden deceleration, this tough, fixed point causes the aorta to tear. PRONUNCIATION: LIG-a-MEN-tum ar-ter-i-O-sum.
