A midline catheter is a long, thin, flexible intravenous catheter that is inserted in the upper arm with the tip located just below the axilla. The catheter must be inserted by an experienced practitioner and placement is guided by ultrasound. A midline catheter can be left in place for several weeks. Unlike a PICC, the tip of a midline catheter is not in the central circulation.
