Alkalosis

A state in which the body's pH exceeds the normal range of 7.35-7.45. Alkalosis is less common than acidosis. In trauma patients, alkalosis is associated with hyperventilation, gastric suction, or inappropriate sodium bicarbonate administration. In an alkalotic state, oxygen has a greater affinity to hemoglobin, making less oxygen available to the tissues. PRONUNCIATION: alk-A-lo-sis.
