Fibrinogen

Fibrinogen is a critical blood protein produced in the liver. In the presence of tissue or vascular injury, fibrinogen is converted by thrombin to fibrin and then to a fibrin-based blood clot. Fibrin clots function primarily to occlude blood vessels to stop bleeding. In the trauma patient, fibrinogen can be quickly depleted and frequently requires replacement. PRONUNCIATION: fi-BRIN-o-gen.
