IVC filter

A cage-like filter that is inserted percutaneously through the right femoral vein and positioned in the vena cava just below the renal vessels. The purpose of an IVC filter is to trap large clots from the leg and pelvic vessels to prevent them from reaching the heart and lungs. IVC filter use is very controversial, but it remains an option for patients who cannot be heparinized. Today, most devices are temporary and retrievable, so they can be removed prior to hospital discharge.
