Excess edema, blood, or free fluid in the abdominal compartment elevates intra-abdominal pressure. High intra-abdominal pressure reduces organ perfusion, which leads to ischemia, organ failure, and death. Occasionally, ACS is caused by an external force such as burn eschar or a malpositioned pelvic binder.
