Brown-Séquard syndrome

A rare spinal cord disorder that results from injury to one side of the spinal cord in which the spinal cord is damaged but not completely severed. Patients experience paralysis (hemiparaplegia) on one side of the body and loss of sensation on the opposite. Most commonly the result of penetrating trauma. PRONUNCIATION: brown sequ-ARD. Also known as hemicord or lateral hemisection.
