Cardiac preload

Preload is the amount of stretch in the myocardial muscle prior to contraction. In hypovolemic patients with normal cardiac function, preload is strongly influenced by the amount of blood in the heart. Low preload results in poor cardiac output, while normal preload results in good cardiac output.
