Chelation therapy

Chelation medications are given to bind lead or other heavy metals in the body to facilitate renal excretion. In trauma patients, chelation therapy is occasionally required for individuals with an elevated serum lead level due to a retained bullet, especially when the bullet has been in prolonged contact with cerebrospinal, pleural, or synovial (joint) fluid, usually months or years after being shot.
