Negative inspiratory force (NIF)

A pulmonary function test that measures a patient's maximum inspiratory effort when inhaling. This test is used to identify and trend respiratory reserve and predict the need for mechanical ventilation, particularly in patients with spinal cord injuries. Also see Forced vital capacity.
