An arteriovenous malformation (AVM) is an abnormal tangle of blood vessels connecting arteries directly to veins rather than through capillaries. AVMs are usually congenital; they enlarge over time and are prone to rupture. These vascular malformations can occur anywhere in the body but are particularly problematic when they occur in the brain or spinal cord.
